Instruction types
Classes at IU Southeast are offered in a combination of in-person, hybrid (online and in-person), as well as fully online asynchronous or synchronous instruction.
Below are descriptions of the types of courses offered. For reference, classes are termed synchronous (classes that require students and professors to be online at the same time) or asynchronous (students are given a time frame to complete online assignments with professors providing interaction and input on materials, lectures, tests and assignments.)
Students should expect instruction and assignments in online and face-to-face learning environments. 26% to 75% of the instruction is provided through asynchronous online or synchronous live video instruction from platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Canvas. The remainder of the instruction is provided through traditional face-to-face or in-person instruction. Regular on-campus meetings are required, and the schedule of classes notes which days and times students should reserve for face-to-face instruction. Faculty will let students know in their syllabus (course outline) exactly which days they should expect to appear on campus as many students will be broken into smaller groups for face-to-face instruction in accordance with IU safety protocols.
Students should expect instruction and assignments in virtual and online environments. 26% to 75% of the instruction is provided through asynchronous online education, where students will work on a timetable set by faculty in their syllabus (course outline) to complete coursework online. The remainder of the instruction is provided by synchronous live video instruction from platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Canvas at regularly scheduled times. No on-campus meetings are required.
Students should expect 76% to 100% of the instruction to be provided by synchronous live video instruction, with any remainder taught through asynchronous online instruction. Synchronous live video instruction from platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Canvas will occur at the times listed for the course on the schedule of classes, and in the instructor’s syllabus (course outline).
Students should expect all of their learning to be online. 100% of instruction is provided entirely through asynchronous online education in which the student is not bound by place or time. No on-campus meetings are required. Any synchronous live video course activities will be optional and/or recorded for later viewing with no additional penalties or hardships for the student (eg., having to write a paper to “make up” for missing a live video lecture). Students will work on a timetable set by faculty in their syllabus (course outline) to complete coursework online.
Student should expect instruction for the overwhelming majority of their course to be online with minimal face-to-face learning environments or assessments. 76% to 99% of instruction is provided through asynchronous online education. Students are required to come to a physical campus location at least once during the semester, and the faculty syllabus (course outline) will make this date of attendance clear. Like 100% online classes, any synchronous live video course activities should be optional and/or recorded for later viewing.
